Panoramic view of Gmunden, in Upper Austria, taken over Lake Traunsee: in the background, the town stretches along the left bank, with rows of houses, church towers and a small castle; at right rises the rocky massif of the Traunstein, labelled. In the foreground, almost at the centre, stands out the island castle of Ort (“Orth”), surrounded by water and linked to the shore by a long wooden bridge, with boats moored by the landing stage. Along the upper strip, cartouche with the title “GMVNDEN”, flanked by two decorative elements; at upper right, indication of the cardinal point “Septentrio”. At lower right margin, cartouche with Latin inscription mentioning that the view was drawn by Georg Hoefnagel after a previous model, dated 1594. Verso printed in Latin under the heading GMVNDA , with historical and geographical description of the small lakeside town and its commercial connections, paged “53”, forming part of a central volume of the urban atlas Civitates orbis terrarum by Georg Braun and Frans Hogenberg.
