Bardum Pomeraniae (Barth, Pomerânia). Colónia, c. 1598. - [BARTH (POMERANIA)]. Bardum Pomeraniae. Georg BRAUN; Frans HOGENBERG (eds.). [Cologne, Georg Braun & Frans Hogenberg, c. 1598]. Engraving; 425 × 535 mm (sheet). Panoramic view of the town of Barth in Pomerania. The urban enclosure appears oval and densely built up, protected by walls and towers; the parish churches and town hall stand out by their massing. To the left, navigable waters with sailing and rowing boats; all around, cultivated fields, roads and windmills emphasise the agricultural and maritime setting of this small Hanseatic town. In the foreground, a frieze of figures in local costume, grouped in conversation and walking, adds scale and life to the scene. In the sky are two armorial shields and, in the centre, a cartouche with the title. Text printed on the verso in Latin under the heading BARDVM POMERANIAE, with an extensive historical and economic notice on the town; pagination “45”, from volume V of the Civitates orbis terrarum.
