Razeburgum (Ratzeburg, Schleswig-Holstein). Colónia, c. 1598. - [RATZEBURG (SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN)]. Razeburgum. Georg BRAUN; Frans HOGENBERG (eds.). [Cologne, Georg Braun & Frans Hogenberg, c. 1598]. Engraving; 425 × 535 mm (sheet). Panoramic view of the town of Ratzeburg, built on an island in the large surrounding lake. The urban core appears as an almost circular enclosure, with walls, towers and gates, linked by causeways and bridges to the suburbs on the northern side. Within, the mass of the cathedral and other churches dominates the regular blocks; outside are gardens, mills and small settlements. The lake is animated by boats; in the foreground, figures of travellers and peasants add scale. At the top are a cartouche with the title and two shields. Text printed on the verso in Latin under the heading RAZEBVRGVM, with a historical notice on the town and its former bishopric; pagination “43”, from volume V of the Civitates orbis terrarum.
