View of the city of Bremen, heavily walled and surrounded by wide ditches and earthworks, set on the bank of the river Weser (Lat. Visurgis). The urban layout is very regular, a dense grid of blocks punctuated by churches and large civic buildings; to the south, on the opposite bank, are redoubts and a small citadel. The Weser is busy with several sailing vessels, while in the foreground a frieze of figures—a merchant, a cleric, a couple—gives scale and life to the scene. A decorative cartouche in the lower left corner bears a Latin inscription praising Bremen as a Hanseatic city, rich and elegant in its trade; at the top runs the title band BREMA.
