In the upper register, Tönning stretches along the banks of the river Eider, with quays and piles crowded with ships; the large fortified complex and the parish church dominate the scene, linked by ramps and bridges to the terraced houses on the embankment. Heraldic medallions and small vignettes reinforce the identification of the place. In the lower register, Husum opens onto the bay with canals and dykes, showing rows of merchant houses and the tall church tower, with sailing ships making for the anchorage; drained fields and tree-lined roads underline the maritime and agricultural character of the region.
