In the upper register, Helsingør (Elsinore) opens onto the Øresund strait, with intense movement of sailing ships; to the right, the fortified complex of Kronborg dominates, with the waterfront houses and windmills on the hills behind. In the lower register, Ribe presents a long urban frontage cut by towers and spires and, in the foreground, roads, dykes and meadows with cattle and carts, emphasising the agricultural character of the surroundings. A central cartouche bears the title ELSINOR and, below, the band RIPEN, accompanied by small lateral cartouches with legends. Text printed on the verso in Latin under the headings HELSINGORUM and RIPAE, with a historical notice and poetic dedication to Nicolao Kaas, chancellor of the kingdom of Denmark; pagination “33”, from volume V of the Civitates orbis terrarum.
