Ekelenforda (Eckernförde, Holsácia). Colónia, c. 1598. - [ECKERNFÖRDE (SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN)]. Ekelenforda. Georg BRAUN; Frans HOGENBERG (eds.). [Cologne, Georg Braun & Frans Hogenberg, c. 1598]. Engraving; 425 × 535 mm (sheet). View of the port town of Eckernförde at the end of the Baltic bay of the same name. The urban layout, arranged in long blocks parallel to the waterfront, is organised around the parish church and a central square; along the shores are quays, slipways, piles and shipyards with intense movement of vessels. The neighbouring hills show windmills, roads and an old circular earthwork; the bar and anchorage are busy with sailing ships. In the upper left corner appears the town’s coat of arms; at the lower left, a cartouche with the title EKELENFORDA. Text printed on the verso in Latin under the heading EKELENFORDA, with a historical notice on the settlement and epigrams—including a distich “in cerevisiam Ekelenfordensem”; pagination “31”, from volume V of the Civitates orbis terrarum.
