Otonium (Odense, Fiónia). Colónia, c. 1598. - [ODENSE (FUNEN, DENMARK)]. Otonium. Georg BRAUN; Frans HOGENBERG (eds.). [Cologne, Georg Braun & Frans Hogenberg, c. 1598]. Engraving; 425 × 535 mm (sheet). View of the episcopal city of Odense on the island of Funen. The urban enclosure, surrounded by moats and waterways, presents a very regular grid of streets and blocks, with numerous orchards and gardens within the walls; the cathedral and other large churches stand out, as do monastic and civic buildings. To the right, canals lead to the Odense Fjord, where several ships are sailing; in the background are woods, fields and dykes. In the foreground, two figures give scale to the composition; at the lower right, a cartouche with legend, and at the top a long band with the Latin title describing Odense as a “civitas episcopalis”. Text printed on the verso in Latin under the heading OTONIVM, with historical and ecclesiastical notes on the city; pagination “30”, from volume V of the Civitates orbis terrarum.
