Berncastellum; Manderschet (Bernkastel no Mosela; Manderscheid no Eifel). Colónia, c. 1598. - [BERNKASTEL (MOSELLE); MANDERSCHEID (EIFEL)]. Berncastellum; Manderschet. Georg BRAUN; Frans HOGENBERG (eds.). [Cologne, Georg Braun & Frans Hogenberg, c. 1598]. Engraving; 425 × 535 mm (sheet). Composite plate with three views. In the upper band, two panoramas of the Moselle valley: at left, Bernkastel and, opposite, the suburb of Cues (the homeland of Nicholas of Cusa), both set between vine-covered hills, with riverside houses marked by tall parish towers; the river, labelled Mosel(l)a flv., shows barges and boats. In the lower band, a wide view of the twin castles of Manderscheid—Ober- and Nider-Manderscheidt—dominating wooded gorges above the river Kyll; a pair of figures in the foreground gives scale. A very decorative ensemble bringing together the wine-growing landscape of the Moselle and the castle scenery of the Eifel. Text printed on the verso in Latin under the headings BERNCASTELLVM and MANDERSCHET, with historical and ecclesiastical notices; pagination “25”, from volume V of the Civitates orbis terrarum.
