Above, Tours (“le Jardin de France”), taken from a high viewpoint on the banks of the Loire: the urban silhouette is dominated by the towers of the cathedral of Saint-Gatien and by numerous spires; stretches of wall, gates and agricultural suburbs are visible; in the foreground, figures in contemporary dress enliven the paths. Below, Angers (Andegavum), stretching along the Maine, with dense housing, multiple churches (including the cathedral of Saint-Maurice) and the massive fortified complex of the castle; the foreground shows rural work and activity along the river embankment. Compass points “Septentrio/Occidens” engraved on the frames and internal legends identify notable buildings.
