In the upper register, LVGDVNVM (Lyon), a broad valley view with the walled city spreading along the Sohne fluvius (Saône), between vine-covered hills and rural houses; a numbered legend identifies the main buildings and parishes (Saint-Jean, Saint-Paul, Cordeliers, Célestins, “Nostre Dame de Confort”, “La Platière”, etc.). In the lower register, VIENNA (Vienne in Dauphiné), a panorama over the Rhosne fluvius (Rhône), dominated by a large castle and the fortifications descending to the town; inscriptions on the copper indicate the “Le grand chemin de Rochillon en Dauphiné”. Between the two registers is the credit “Ex archetypo aliorum delineavit Georgius Hoefnagelus”.
