gravura - [BISCAY — ST ADRIAN]. Mons et Crypta S. Adriani in Biscaia. Georg BRAUN; Frans HOGENBERG (eds.). [Cologne, Georg Braun & Frans Hogenberg, c. 1598]. Engraving; 425 × 535 mm (sheet). A sheet of marked topographical and ethnographic interest from the Civitates orbis terrarum . The main upper panel depicts the Cave of St Adrian in Biscay (Basque Country): a vast rocky shelter with a small chapel inside and pilgrims climbing the path among crags. Flanking side panels show two costume studies, “Nobilis Matrona Biscaina” and “Nobilis Virgo Biscaina.” The lower register presents a procession of Basque figures —armed men, travellers, vendors, women carrying baskets, musicians and dancers—accompanied by French captions naming places and costumes (including Vitoria , Saint-Jean-de-Luz and Bayonne ) and concluding with two women “ allant à l’église ”. The composition credits Georg (Joris) Hoefnagel as the model, with a 16th-century date on the drawing. Verso printed in Latin headed MONS ET CRYPTA S. ADRIANI IN BISCAIA , with historical/devotional text; page number “16.”
