gravura - [GRANADA]. Granata. Georg BRAUN; Frans HOGENBERG (eds.). [Cologne, Georg Braun & Frans Hogenberg, c. 1598]. Engraving; 425 × 535 mm (sheet). Panoramic bird’s-eye view of Granada from the Civitates orbis terrarum . Oriented with “ Orient ” at upper right and “ Occidens ” at lower left, the city rises on a hillside amidst gardens and orchards, with the Sierra Nevada beyond. In the foreground, figures in Hispano-Moorish dress—travellers, a tambourine player, and women carrying loads—animate the road down to a winding river. At upper left an ornate cartouche with an alphabetical key names major sites, including the Alhambra and Generalife , churches, convents and suburban quarters. The plate is after a drawing by Joris (Georg) Hoefnagel , dated 1564 , as on the related Granada views. Verso printed in Latin under the heading GRANATA , with historical/topographical text; page “13.”
