Copper engraving; 330 × 395 mm (engraving); 445 × 625 mm (passepartout). Bird’s-eye plan of Goa , the walled town shown with a concentric street pattern and suburban quarters expanding eastwards; in the foreground the estuary with the islands (Divar, Chorão, etc.) and lively shipping . At upper right, a cartouche with a numerical key names the principal religious houses (Santa Catarina, São Roque, the Jesuit college of São Paulo , São Domingos, São Francisco, Santo Agostinho, and others); at left appear armorial devices . The composition is derived from the famous Doetecum model first published in Linschoten’s Itinerario (1596) and was issued in Gottfried’s cosmography, engraved by Merian .
