Version of the traditional Edict of Faith of the Portuguese Holy Office, issued by the “apostolic” inquisitors, ordering—under pain of latae sententiae major excommunication—that within thirty days everyone denounce to the Tribunal any faults, suspicions, or heretical propositions. It itemises, in successive paragraphs, the offences to be denounced, including: denying the Catholic Faith after baptism; denying the authority of the Church, the councils, and the Roman Pontiff; adherence to the sects of Luther or Calvin; contempt for the sacraments (especially auricular confession and the Eucharist/Real Presence); asserting that it suffices to ask God directly for forgiveness without confession; denying the cult of images, relics, and the intercession of the saints; refusing fasts, feast-days, and vows; denying Purgatory; possessing, reading, or disseminating prohibited books; superstitious practices, witchcraft, and blasphemies, among others. It orders that the Letter be read publicly and posted in all churches and convents and renewed annually on the first Sunday of Lent. Template text of the tribunal (Lisbon/Évora/Coimbra), of wide circulation and repeatedly reprinted throughout the 17th–18th centuries; this copy preserves at the end the blank space intended for the manuscript completion of place and date (“Given at … in the Holy Office under our signs and its seal on the …”), indicating a “blank” issue for recurrent use. A normative and disciplinary document and a significant witness to the inquisitorial legal and religious culture in Portugal.
