Conselho Geral do Sancto Officio da Inquisicao - HOLY OFFICE (General Council). The General Council of the Holy Office of the Inquisition… Decree of the Sacred Congregation of the Roman Inquisition, 8 July 1666 (translated into Portuguese). Lisbon: At the press of Antonio Craesbeeck de Mello, Printer to H.R.H., 1676. Printed broadside, single column with large woodcut initial; 600 × 435 mm (sheet). Old vertical fold; minor edge nicks and small tears, light staining; a clean, legible copy. Portuguese edition—ordered for dissemination throughout the realm—of the decree issued by the Sacred Congregation of the Roman Inquisition in a general congregation held before Pope Alexander VII (8 July 1666). Drawing on constitutions of Paul V , it restates the obligations of prelates, religious and confessors to denounce errors and suspicions of heresy, to obey and cooperate with the Holy Office, and sets penalties for concealment or disobedience. It commands the decree to be posted and publicly read; the General Council directs its printing and publication in Portugal. Signed by councillors Manuel de Magalhães de Meneses , Manuel Pimentel de Sousa , Manuel de Moura Manoel and Fr. Valério de S. Raimundo . A substantial royal-press broadside by António Craesbeeck de Mello, illustrating the linkage between Rome and the Portuguese Inquisition in the seventeenth century.
