William Bourne (Gravesend, c. 1535-1582), English gunner and mathematician, is the author of one of the most important works on navigation in Elizabethan England. The Regiment for the Sea , first published in 1574, went through numerous editions during the sixteenth century and provided a practical guide to astronomical navigation for English mariners. This critical edition, prepared by E. G. R. Taylor, Emeritus Professor of Geography at the University of London, was published by the Hakluyt Society and gathers together the Regiment and other writings on navigation by Bourne.
