Sp.), a Spiritan priest and collaborator at the Bantu Languages Section of the Division of Ethnology and Ethnography of the Instituto de Investigação Científica de Angola, was one of the foremost scholars of the Bantu languages of Angola during the late colonial period. A descriptive and systematic grammar of Umbundu, the Bantu language spoken by the Ovimbundu peoples of the central highlands of Angola, one of the most widely spoken African languages of the territory. Published under the auspices of the Junta de Investigações do Ultramar, within the ethnolinguistic research programmes promoted by the Portuguese colonial authorities in the final years of overseas rule.
