Foundational Pombaline urban ordinance, issued in the name of King José I, prescribing street layouts, widths and profiles, as well as uniform façades and heights, for the area bounded by São Roque–Loreto, Rua Nova do Almada, the Rossio and the Terreiro do Paço. It reaffirms the ban on unplanned building, establishes new squares and alignments, sets conditions for reconstruction and oversight, and instructs the judicial authority (the Duke Regedor of the High Court) to promulgate and enforce the measure. A key printed instrument of Lisbon’s post-earthquake reconstruction, emblematic of the centralized regulation and regularised aesthetics of the Pombaline city.
