1880s A.H. Andrews & Co. Walnut S-Curve Roll-Top Desk & Armchair - A.H. Andrews and Company (Chicago & New York), antique black walnut S-curve roll-top desk, circa 1880s / 1890s. Also, with a black walnut swivel desk arm chair with rollers. The desk features a S-curve tambour top; eight drawers on the base; numerous compartments, small drawers, and cubby holes on the interior of the top; two pull-out writing slides on each side above the drawers; paneled sides and back; hand-carved floral, leaf and berry decoration; concealed wheels on the base; brass hardware including a keyhole escutcheon marked ”A.H. Andrews & Co. Chicago”; and a nameplate reading ”A.H. Andrews & Co. Chicago-New York.” Measures 40-1/2” (L) x 71-1/2” (W) x 47-1/2” (H). The desk was originally owned by Eugene C. Woodruff (1871-1944); University of Michigan class of 1894 B.S./1896 M.S. /1900 Ph.D; American football coach; academic; electrical engineer; and inventor known for his pioneering work in electrical railway engineering. By descent through the family. CONDITION: Surface wear, scratches, and stains, commensurate with age and use. Part of the lock mechanism is missing.
