1960 SS Leonardo da Vinci Italian Ocean Liner Advertising Artwork - Giovanni Patrone (Italian, 1904–1963), framed advertising print, depicting the SS Leonardo da Vinci transatlantic ocean liner ship, signed lower right ”G. Patrone”, and having a brass plaque affixed to the frame reading ”T/v LEONARDO DA VINCI Italian Line.” The print portrays the Italian ocean liner at sea and most likely would have been used as a promotional tool for a travel agency. The SS Leonardo da Vinci was built in 1960 to replace the ill-fated Andrea Doria, which had sunk off the coast of Nantucket, Massachusetts in 1956 after being struck in heavy fog by the Swedish American Line passenger ship the Stockholm. In 1978 the SS Leonardo da Vinci caught fire in La Spezia, Italy and was eventually scrapped in 1980. Patrone was known for his maritime-themed artwork, which often commemorated notable ships. The print is in a cerused oak frame, with visible grain, measuring 18-1/4” x 25-1/4”. CONDITION: Not examined out of frame. Some minor discoloration and scratching to the print, please see photos.
