Advertising Print of the S.S. United States Transatlantic Ocean Liner - William James Aylward (American, 1875–1956), framed advertising print depicting the transatlantic ocean liner the S.S. United States at sea, with a smaller sailboat in the foreground. Signed lower left ”W.J. Aylward” and with a brass plaque on the frame reading ”'S.S. UNITED STATES Fastest Ship in the World UNITED STATES LINES.” In a blue-grey painted oak frame measuring 23-5/8” x 32-11/16”. The SS United States was built between 1950 and 1951 for United States Line and is the largest ocean liner to be entirely constructed in the United States. It is the fastest ocean liner ever to cross the Atlantic Ocean in either direction, earning the Blue Riband for the highest average speed on her maiden voyage in 1952, a title that still remains uncontested to this day. Advertising prints such as this were often used in travel agencies to promote cruise ship lines and particular ships. CONDITION: Not examined out of frame.
