Executed with Huang Zhou's characteristic energetic brushwork, spontaneous ink lines, and expressive use of color, the composition captures the movement and everyday life of China's northwestern region. Donkeys and the people of Xinjiang were among the artist's most recognizable and enduring subjects. Signed in calligraphy at upper right, dated 1970, and bearing two red artist seals. Mounted as a traditional hanging scroll with gold-patterned brocade surround. Good overall condition with scattered creasing and light age-related wear to the paper and mounting. 70” x 27”. Huang Zhou (1925-1997, China) was an influential modern Chinese painter celebrated for bringing the immediacy of observational sketching into traditional Chinese ink painting. His extensive travels through Xinjiang inspired many of his best-known compositions, particularly lively portrayals of local people, donkeys, horses, and other scenes of everyday life.
