Utagawa Hiroshige Edo Japanese Woodblock - Edo Period Japanese color woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige, titled ”Poem by Chunagon Yakamochi: The Ibaraki Demon and Watanabe Genji Tsuna,” from the series ”Ogura Imitations of One Hundred Poems by One Hundred Poets.” This is No. 6 from the celebrated series jointly designed by Hiroshige, Utagawa Kunisada, and Utagawa Kuniyoshi and published by Ibaya Senzaburo (Dansendo), circa 1845-48. An appealing example of mid-19th-century ukiyo-e combining poetry, folklore, historical legend, and figural imagery. Reverse bears period or early handwritten Japanese inscriptions and several red seals, possibly collector or ownership annotations. 14 1/4” x 9 3/4”. Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858, Japan) was one of the foremost artists of the ukiyo-e tradition and is particularly celebrated for his landscape prints, including ”The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido.” His work is distinguished by atmospheric color, inventive compositions, and poetic interpretations of Japanese landscapes and everyday life.
