Utagawa Hiroshige - Edo Period Japanese Woodblocks - Two Edo Period Japanese color woodblock prints by Utagawa Hiroshige. Includes ”Okitsu: Kiyomigaseki and Seiken Temple,” a view from the Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido depicting sailing vessels on the water with Mount Fuji in the distance, and ”Crowd at the Year-end Fair at Kinryuzan Temple in Asakusa,” from the Famous Places in the Eastern Capital series, depicting the bustling temple grounds, pagoda and surrounding buildings. Both bear Hiroshige signatures and period markings. Vintage condition with toning, fading, staining, creases, losses and edge wear. The Kinryuzan print has a significant loss to the upper right corner and a vertical center fold. Please review photos carefully for condition. Both approx. 13 1/2” x 9”. Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858, Japan) was one of the leading masters of Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock printing, celebrated for his poetic landscapes, travel scenes and views of Edo. His innovative compositions and atmospheric treatment of weather, seasons and distance made him one of the most influential Japanese artists of the 19th century.
