WWII KIA NAMED PURPLE HEART 485TH BOMBER GROUP (H)
WWII Named U.S. Air Force Purple Heart, cased with ribbon bar and lapel pin, named to Captain and Navigator ROBERT R. SCOTT of Niagara Falls, NY, serial number 0-793295. Captain Scott was killed in action over enemy lines on 10 April, 1945 in the vicinity of Sesto Imolese, Italy, and is commemorated at Florence American Cemetery Impruneta, Italy. Capt. Scott was with the 485th Bomb Group (H), 830th Bomb Squadron (H), a Consolidated B-24 Liberator heavy bombardment group that served with Fifteenth Air Force during World War II.
On April 10, 1945 the group was on its 176th mission in the Bologna (Italy) area, targeting the front lines. According to eyewitness accounts, the B-24 WHITE 'X' was struck by flak in the bomb-bay after bombs had been dropped. A fire started in the bomb-bay and spread back to the ball turret. The airplane exploded at an estimated 10,000 feet. Three parachutes were sighted by the tail gunner of White 'Y'. Another statement relays that 'Approx. one (1) mile from the wreckage of the nose was found one (1) isolated grave marked with a wooden cross bearing the name of Robert R. Scott...The civilians in the area of the plane crash stated that three members of the crew parachuted to earth and were taken prisoners by the Germans.' Another statement reports that 'Capt. Scott bailed out of acft. through nose wheel door prior to explosion of acft....Capt. Scott was killed by the enemy either while in his parachute or after capture.' WITH: Original Purple Heart certificate for Capt. Robert R. Scott with mailing tube, presidential memorial certificate. Also included is a copy of the Individual Deceased Personnel File and copies of the declassified missing air crew report.
The 485th engaged in very long range strategic bombing missions to enemy military, industrial and transportation targets in Italy, France, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Romania, and Yugoslavia, during March and April 1945 to support the advance of British Eighth Army in northern Italy. The group was awarded the Distinguished Unit Citation for its action in a mission to Vienna, Austria in 1944. The 485th returned to the United States in May 1945, where it converted to Boeing B-29 Superfortresss, training with Second Air Force. An excellent grouping.
