1925 DOMAIN OF NEPTUNUS REX CERTIFICATE
A certificate of the Domain of Neptunus Rex for sailor James Kerr Boyd of the U.S.S. West Virginia dated 1925. A sticker in the bottom left corner embossed with the insignia of the U.S. Department of the Navy. Made by The Middlesex Sales Company, copyright 1908. The document is 'signed' by Davey Jones and Neptune and it states that the sailor will be protected in voyages and not interfered with by the creatures of the sea. Certificates like these were bought by sailors as part of unofficial initiations in the U.S. Navy. Certificate is in wooden frame. Visible area 16 x 20.5 inches. Overall area 18.75 x 23.25 inches. Not examined outside of frame. Ready for display.
