With The Joy of Color, one of the finest collections of Modern Art in private hands is made accessible to the public for the first time. Until now, the Werner and Gabrielle Merz- bacher Collection has remained a well-kept secret, known for the most part only to museum professionals, who have drawn upon it for loans to art institutions around the world. With the presentation of this landmark exhibition at the Israel Museum and the accompanying catalogue, the public is afforded a unique opportu- nity to explore the range and quality of this remarkable ensemble of Modern Art treasures. While the earliest pieces in the collec- tion include works by Impressionists, Post-Impressionists, and a spectacu- lar Blue Period Picasso, the collection focuses primarily on the Fauves and German Expressionists.
