I. Rennap was a pen name for Israel Panner, an Austrian/British writer and journalist. Mr. Panner was one of the leading Communist Jewish writers of his period. Active in Jewish and Communist circles, in 1934 he became secretary of the Jewish Colonization Association in the USSR. He served in WWII and in 1947 became editor of the Jewish Clarion. Then in 1948 became the London correspondent for Kol HaAm. He was actively spied upon by the British Security Service. The introduction to the book is by William "Willie" Gallacher, M.P., a Scottish trade unionist and communist. He was a founding member of the Communist Party of Great Britain and served two terms in the House of Commons as a Communist Member of Parliament. In 1942, Labour Monthly Magazine said of the book, "There have been many good books on one or other single aspect of the Jewish question. It is the feat of our comrade, Rannap - one possible only to a Marxist scholar - that he has here presented it in all its aspects. He lifts it away from the class of things "peculiar, mysterious, and special", which can only be described but not explained, and relates it to the broad stream of humanity's past and future and the general problems of the working-class movement. When we add that he has written, lucidly and clearly, on the history of the Jewish problem, the experience of Socialism in its solution, the position of Zionism and the Palestine community, with a brief sketch of the strength of organized anti-Semitism in Britain and the U.S.A. today - and has done all this in 116 pages, a compass that should not be too long for anyone, however busy and active, to master - then we can realize the great skill of his achievement and the great value of it to all of us today."
