Kfar Atta (1937) – Official Letter to the Neutral Committee, Signed by Rabbi Benjamin Mendelson, Concerning Enforcement of an Arbitration Award - An original and scarce official letter dated 1937 (Hebrew year 5697), written on the official letterhead of the Rabbinate of Kfar Atta and personally signed in ink by Rabbi Benjamin Mendelson, Rabbi of Kfar Atta (now Kiryat Ata, Mandatory Palestine). The letter is addressed to the “Neutral Committee for the Affairs of Kfar Atta” and concerns the collection of a debt owed by Mr. Goldring, in accordance with an arbitration award previously issued by Rabbi Benjamin Mendelson. The document illustrates Rabbi Mendelson’s important role as a judicial authority and arbitrator within the Jewish community during the British Mandate period, as well as the involvement of local communal bodies in enforcing rabbinical court decisions concerning financial and civil disputes. He later gained national prominence during the Yossele Schumacher Affair, from which he was acquitted in 1962. Official documents from Rabbi Mendelson’s early years in Kfar Atta—especially those bearing his original signature and relating to arbitration, debt collection, and the enforcement of rabbinical rulings—are exceptionally scarce and highly desirable to collectors of Judaica, Mandatory Palestine documents, and Jewish legal history.
