Václav Markovský, born in the Lesser Quarter of Prague, began his artistic career by studying drawing and painting under Ludvík Kohl. From 1803 he was a pupil of Josef Bergler, the first director of the Academy of Fine Arts. In early 1824 he took part in the Academy's exhibition in the Clementinum building, where he exhibited a historical composition – an oil painting depicting Charles IV bidding farewell to the cardinals and nobles in the Bohemian camp after the imperial coronation in Rome in 1355.
