Félix Ziem was a French painter, born on February 26, 1821, in Beaune, and died on November 10, 1911, in Paris. He was a member of the Barbizon School, known for his paintings of seascapes and oriental scenes. Ziem initially studied architecture in Dijon, but became a painter after traveling to Venice in 1841. He exhibited frequently at the Paris Salon beginning in 1849 and amassed a large fortune from his art. His works can be found in major museums such as the Louvre, the Hermitage, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Among his favorite subjects were Venice, Constantinople, and Martigues, where he spent part of his life.
