Augsburg Master, 16th/17th Century. The Last Judgement - This complex work offers a theological and dramatic representation of the Last Judgement. The painting is distinguished by a composition divided into three distinct registers, a defining characteristic of religious painting from the early Baroque period. In the upper register, surrounded by an aura of celestial light, is the imposing figure of Christ as Judge. Flanked by apostles and the Virgin Mary, he presides over the scene, with the earthly globe at his feet. The middle register, suspended on clouds, illustrates a ballet of souls. Some figures, guided by angelic forms, are lifted into heavenly glory, while an angel holds open the book of life. In the lower register, a stark contrast is evident. The damned are shown being cast into hell, a chaotic scene of contorted bodies met by demonic figures. The work is notable for its blend of styles, the realism of its figures, and the pronounced symbolism of its details. Oil on wood panel. 33 x 51 cm Dimensions 33 x 51 cm
