The painting depicts the young Saint John the Baptist reclining in a serene, mountainous landscape. Brenner employs a classicizing style characterized by smooth, porcelain-like skin tones and a meticulous attention to naturalistic detail. The composition is rich in traditional iconography. St. John is shown as a youth, resting against a mossy bank, his gaze contemplative and forward-looking. He holds his characteristic reed cross, while a lamb—symbolizing the Agnus Dei—rests peacefully beside him, looking up toward the saint.
