Flemish Master, Circa 1520–1550. - Flemish Master, Circa 1520–1550. The Crucifixion. This significant 16th-century Northern Renaissance triptych is a masterful example of Flemish oil painting, characterized by its luminous glazes and meticulous attention to detail. Central Panel depicts the Crucifixion of Christ on Golgotha. He is flanked by the Virgin Mary in traditional blue robes and Saint John the Evangelist in red. A skull at the base of the cross represents Adam, a common motif symbolizing redemption. Left Wing features a kneeling donor in contemporary 16th-century attire, presented by his patron saint (likely an Apostle). This panel served to immortalize the piety of the individual who commissioned the work. Right Wing portrays two holy women, likely Mary Magdalene (distinguished by her rich garments and flowing hair) and another saintly figure, engaged in prayer and reading sacred scripture. Executed in oil on oak panels, the work showcases the ”jewel-like” brilliance of the Flemish tradition.
