The gentleman is dressed in a black doublet with fine textural detailing, set off by a prominent, crisp white ruff—a hallmark of high-status European fashion in the late 16th century. In his right hand, he holds a small tablet inscribed with the French motto ”Rien Sans Diev” (Nothing without God), signaling his religious devotion.
