ATTRIBUTED TO PIETER MULIER THE YOUNGER, CALLED ”IL CAVALIER TEMPESTA” (c. 1637–1701) - ATTRIBUTED TO PIETER MULIER THE YOUNGER, CALLED ”IL CAVALIER TEMPESTA” (c. 1637–1701) - Mountainous Landscape with Herdsmen, Cattle, and Fortress. A monumental pastoral composition rendered with the dramatic lighting and rugged topography characteristic of Pieter Mulier’s Italian period. Illuminated by a sharp, focused beam of light in the lower foreground, a young herdsman in a tunic and sheepskin vest stands beside two oxen and a dog. To the right, a seated mother nurses her child on a rocky outcrop beside a woven basket and walking stick. A mountain waterfall cascades over dark rocks on the left, counterbalanced on the right by a steep, wooded cliff topped with a medieval stone fortress. Atmospheric perspective recedes into distant mountain peaks beneath a dynamic, cloud-swept sky. Marked by strong contrasts of light and shadow, fluid brushwork in the foliage, and detailed rendering of the livestock and figures. Oil on canvas , 160 x 127 cm Dimensions 160 x 127 cm
