Postal History. Portugal. United Kingdom. Letter sent from Groton on 9 January 1865, unfranked, to London. In London, upon arrival, “POSTAGE NOT PAID TO LONDON 1/” was applied. As the addressee was in Lisbon, it was sent to Portugal on 23 January, via France, with a postage of 6d applied, which added to the 1/ fine, makes 1/6, as recorded. This amount corresponds to 360 reis of PB (British postage), plus 40 reis of Portuguese postage (PP), for a total of 400 reis to be paid in Lisbon by the addressee. Very rare letter.
