Postal history. Pre-philately. NEWFOUNDLAND. 1812. Letter written in Ferryland, Newfoundland on 8.9.1812, concerning cod business, and addressed to Hunt Newman Roope, in Porto. Hand-carried by the favor of the captain of the brig “Midam”, it was unloaded in Spain, marked S. ROQUE/ ANDALUCIA BAXA, from where it was sent to Porto, via Lisbon, marked E, and postage of 90 reis applied in Porto on 26.9. It is one of the oldest letters registered from Newfoundland to Portugal. MR. (part of the closing flap is missing)
