Bidspirit auction | Pre-philately. Letter written from Sagor
Pre-philately. Letter written from Sagor (Kolkata) on December 14, 1816, to Lisbon, where it arrived on June 18, 1817, and where a postage of 360 reis was applied. Inside, the sender writes, “After 168 days of travel, we arrived here thanks to God...”. The applied postage of 360 is not from the British packet, so it can be assumed that it entered Portugal via Spain and applied a postage of 360 for letters of weight from 1 to 1 ½ /8. If it had arrived in Lisbon by Portuguese ship, it would have been marked Corº Maritimo. Potier Correspondence.
