Postal history. 1808. Madeira. Letter sent from Hull on 31.3.1808 to Funchal, where it was received on 9.5, carried by hand by Commander Wilson of the “Whim”, a coal carrier from Hull. Upon arrival, a postage charge of 20 reis was applied, in accordance with an edict sent from Lisbon on 20.1.1807, by which the postage charges for the entry of foreign correspondence into Madeira are regulated by its weight in accordance with the table of first distance letters, dated 24 April 1801.
