Pre-philately. French invasions. Letter sent from Lisbon on 20.1.1808, Pico after the French armies had entered Lisbon, marked “Bureau General/ Armée D'Observation de La Gironde” Armèe 1 (R9). This mark was the precursor of the “Armée de Portugal” known since May 1808. Postage payable in France of 11 decimes. Letter shows signs of soiling on the front and back. Mark MR.
