Pre-philately. Maritime Mail. Letter sent from Angra on 14 September 1823 to Lisbon by the yacht “N. Srª da Guia e Almas”, together with a shipment of wheat. In Angra, it was received at the post office for postage to be paid, and was inscribed “Postage of 120 reis paid”, which made it exempt from any other postage in Lisbon. The pre-franking, contemplated in the decree creating the maritime mail, was very unusual. MR.
