Pre-philately. Letter from the SN, written in Alcoutim on June 22, 1834, mailed at the Vila Real de Santo António post office, marked Vª REAL in manuscript VRS ms1 rar.9, for Faro. Alcoutim only had a nominative mark from November 1834 onwards; until then, letters were marked in Vila Real, this being the oldest known mark. This was during the height of the guerrilla war in the Algarve. MR.
