Synagogue / Ambulance Campaign – Jewish Brigade, 1940–1945 - Lot of two items – ”Synagogue / Ambulance” campaign (Jewish Brigade, 1940–1945) Two rare artifacts documenting the unique humanitarian and spiritual initiative organized by the Chief Rabbi’s Religious Emergency Council, founded by Britain’s Chief Rabbi Dr. Joseph Hertz during World War II. The project, directed by Rabbi Dr. Solomon Schonfeld, aimed to send mobile units serving both as synagogues and ambulances to aid Jewish soldiers and survivors across liberated Europe. Original fundraising leaflet, London, early 1940s – printed appeal describing the Synagogue–Ambulance scheme, illustrated with two expressive linocut-style images signed “HERZ.” Size 25×14 cm. Original WWII photograph showing one of the actual Synagogue–Ambulance vehicles in Europe, with four Jewish Brigade soldiers standing in front. Inscribed “Synagogue – Ambulance / Congregation of the Jewish People.” Silver gelatin print on Velox paper, 7×5 cm. A moving and historically significant lot illustrating the intersection of faith, compassion, and relief work led by the Jewish Brigade and the Chief Rabbi’s Office in wartime Britain.
