About the Author – from The Encyclopedia of the Pioneers and Builders of the Yishuv: Shulamit Tileiouf was born in Jerusalem’s Nahalat Shiva neighborhood (July 5, 1907). Her father, Pinhas Cohen-Rabin, was President of the Bukharan Jewish community and descended from generations of rabbis and judges; her mother, Sarah, was the daughter of Rabbi Shimon Hakham. She received both traditional and general education. In 1911 she moved with her parents to Bukhara, where she studied in a heder until 1920, and later at a state school named after Abraham Mapu until 1941. She married Yitzhak Haim HaCohen Tileiouf in 1941; a few years later they returned to Mandatory Palestine and settled in Tel Aviv (1934). Tileiouf devoted her life to public work: co-founder of the Bukharan Women’s Organization in Israel; chairwoman of its Tel Aviv branch; founder and volunteer leader of the women’s committee assisting the Rambam and Beit Yosef institutions; major supporter of the “Or HaChaim” educational center in Bnei Brak; elected in 1961 as chairwoman of the Bukharan Women’s Union. She helped initiate the bilingual (Hebrew–Bukharan) periodical Ahdut, publishing poems and essays. A founder of a scholarship fund for higher education among the Bukharan community. Her home was open to the needy, and she was known for extensive charitable work carried out discreetly.
