Ottoman Empire – Palestine – Austrian Post in Jerusalem – Free Jewish Mail Service – Cover to Rishon le Zion, 1906 - Small envelope from the period of foreign post offices operating in the Ottoman Empire in Palestine. The cover bears an Austrian post office postmark from Jerusalem (P. Jaffa / Jerusalem) and no stamp, consistent with the special free internal mail service offered to Jewish correspondence between Jerusalem, Jaffa and the Jewish colonies. Addressed in manuscript to: Monsieur David Joudelovitz Rischon le Zion The Austrian post office occasionally handled inland Jewish mail without charge in order to attract Jewish correspondence to the Austrian postal network. Postmark dated 18 September 1906 (apparently). No return address. The small size suggests it probably contained a New Year greeting card, based on the date and format. Condition: Good overall condition with minor age toning and light stains. No significant tears. An interesting historical postal item from the period of the foreign post offices in Ottoman Palestine, illustrating Austrian postal activity and mail connections between Jerusalem and the early Jewish colonies.
