Petach Tiqva – Local Post Stamp, 1909 – on Philatelic Exhibition Page - Local post stamp of Petach Tiqva (Petah Tikva) issued in 1909, one of the earliest known local postal labels of the Jewish settlements in Ottoman Palestine. The stamp was produced by the Petach Tiqva local council to pay for the transport of mail from the settlement to other towns and settlements in the country. The design depicts an orange tree, agricultural plough and rural landscape, symbolizing the agricultural character of the colony. The inscription “Petach-Tiqva” appears at the top, with the value 14 at the lower corner. Mail bearing this label was delivered via the Austrian Post Office in Palestine, which agreed to handle such correspondence and operated the town’s first postal agency. For overseas destinations, the label had to be used in addition to regular Austrian postage stamps. The stamp was in use 1909–1910, until it was banned by the Ottoman authorities, after which the Turkish post office became the official postal agency in Petach Tiqva.
