Philatelic Exhibition Page – Petach Tiqva “Jewish Colony Mail” – Local Label 14 Para with Petach Tiqva and Jaffa Cancellations - Decorative philatelic exhibition page from a thematic collection titled Israel Postal Issues, illustrating the early postal service of the Jewish colony of Petach Tiqva in the early 20th century. At the center of the page appears the Petach Tiqva local mail label – denomination 14 Para, used for mail originating in the colony before the establishment of an official post office there. The label is shown together with illustrations of two postal cancellations: • Petach Tiqva Local Council postmark, bearing a Star of David. • Austrian Post Office cancellation in Jaffa – “JAFFA Österreichische Post.” Historical background explained on the page: Until 1908, mail sent from Petach Tiqva traveled only as far as Jaffa, from where it had to be forwarded privately to the colony. In 1909, a branch of the Austrian Post Office was established in Petach Tiqva. Prior to that, letters had to bear a local label costing 14 Para, issued by the Petach Tiqva local council, which retained the proceeds to finance the private transport of mail between the colony and Jaffa. The illustrated example demonstrates the postal route: the item was first cancelled in Petach Tiqva, then carried to Jaffa, where it received an additional cancellation before continuing to its final destination.
