Interim Period Cover – KKL stamp overprinted “Doar”, Minhelet Ha’am Haifa cancellation and Mandate Haifa postmark dated 16 MAY 1948 - Envelope from the early days of the State of Israel, franked with a 10 mil KKL stamp overprinted “Doar”, used as a provisional postage stamp during the transition from the British Mandate postal system to the postal service of the newly established state. The stamp is tied to the cover by a Minhelet Ha’am Haifa cancellation, representing one of the early postal markings of the provisional Jewish administration that replaced the Mandate authorities. Also present is a Mandate-era Haifa postmark, still in use immediately after independence. The date in the device has been set to 16 MAY 1948, the first full weekday following the declaration of the State of Israel, when postal services resumed under Jewish administration. Interim “Doar” overprinted stamps remained valid for postal use until 22 May 1948, making covers dated in the first days after independence historically significant postal documents illustrating the transition between the Mandate postal system and that of the new State of Israel.
